Finalement il me laisse repartir….
Asie centrale / Central Asia
With Russia I begin to grasp how large the earth is and how far a road can stretch in these vast barely hilly expands. The more I drive East the drier the air and the ground melting in hues of yellow and grey. Arriving in Kazakhstan I meet my first camels. They roam free in small herds by the road, for ever chewing an everlasting gum. They are the last memories of the Silk Road which could be now called the Petrol Highway. Towns have developed, lorries and trains cross the country at the sole service of the Petrol and Gaz kings.
If between Etyrau and Beyneu I was lucky enough to ride on a brand new tarmac, this soon changes to gravel and sand after Beyneu and I eat 60kms of dust.
Crossing the border and troubles
Going through customs is always a difficult moment. Travellers as a rule don’t like borders. A piece of paper, a stamp, a signature… A whole array of paperwork and justifications. You wait for hours until these frontier lords deign to pay you attention. Always better to be rested and relaxed. Usually they are surprised. Alone on a bike without a husband and coming from France at that! But sometimes you come across the usual idiot who wants to fatten his pay check. My Kazakh visa does mention that I travel with a 125cc bike but it seems that at the Russian border, some 800kms back, they forgot to give me a mysterious paper. Bugger… How am I going to get out of Kazakhstan now…
The custom guy, wanting to be helpful take me to a small room. He wants money. I take out 50 euros. He bursts out laughing. He wants 2000 US$. What????? I refuse and feel truly depressed. The guy suggests a 3minute « cuddle » instead. I refuse. Niet, niet and f… niet. I am very offended. I am married and have two children (any argument will do). He’ll do with only touching my breasts… I have only one card left in my sleeve. I burst into tears, showing how desperate I am (which is indeed the case). Did he get bored or was it the presence of my new travel companion Volker waiting outside the door that prompted him to let me go…
Volker is German and drives an Africa twin. He is riding up to Mongolia. Luck brings Igor a Bielorussian to cross our path some 10kms after the border. He rides a Varadero 1000 and has just made a repair.
For three days, we travel together the three of us. Igo acting as interpreter. Being the slower one, I will always remain between the two of them and I feel the reassuring presence of someone who will be there if there is a problem… But soon I must travel alone and the show must go on.
